Vacation in Washington, D.C.!
How to get there
We flew Southwest Airlines to Baltimore-Washington International (BWI) airport, which
is in Baltimore, not Washington, D.C.    It's very convenient to Baltimore.
Charlaine had done her homework, and had a discount coupon for a shuttle service to D.C.,
but when we landed (late, due to weather) we could not find that shuttle company.    The one
shuttle company that we could find was reporting a wait of way over an hour for a ride (it was
raining, but I still thought that was ridiculous).    It was late; we were hungry (although they
do give you a sandwich on Southwest now, just like the other airlines); so I told Justin to
get a cab, even though it was $50.    Immediately, for some mysterious reason, all the cabs suddenly
disappeared, too.    Fortunately for all involved, a gypsy hailed us, and we had a nice ride
into town in a Town Car.    I don't like having to using "scab labor", but somebody needs
to review the awarding of franchises at that airport.    You sure can tell you're not in
Texas.
What this means for you
Unless you have a couple of free frequent flyer tickets on Southwest (like we did), I'd suggest
flying in to National.    If you don't have too much luggage, you can take the
convenient subway (described elsewhere on this site) into D.C.
And don't even think about taking the train from BWI into D.C.!
