Vacation in Washington, D.C.!

Mt. Vernon

If you visit D.C., you must visit Mt Vernon.    It evidences the exquisitely beautiful and elegant life that only the rich can live.    And the Washingtons were loaded with dough (I had no idea)!    Martha was a wealthy widow, and George did well after the war.     More on that below.

If you visit this year, you'll get a ticket stub like this one. It's the 200th anniversary of George's death, and they have his bedroom made up like the day he died..    They also have a special funeral tour.

On a sunny day, the mansion is truly impressive.    They had a reserved room just for the servants of guests; this room was larger than the houses most families lived in at the time.

The grounds are absolutely stunning, and would not be out of place in the swankiest of neighborhoods today.

They've just finishing constructing this barn that George himself designed.    Turns out that he was growing more grain (his cash crop) than he could economically process with his slaves.    So he designed this round barn, so that mules could walk around in circles and thresh wheat that was laid on a slatted second floor.    Much of this grain went to produce whiskey; George was the largest supplier of grain for distilling in the area (another way he made lots of money).
