Charlaine visited the State Department's diplomatic reception rooms,
where people such as the Queen of England come to have tea.    Lots of fine antiques and art works,
but not your tax dollars at work - it's supported entirely by private contribution.
Very high security; Charlaine had to submit biographical information six weeks
in advance of the tour. |
Where we stayed.    A nice "business class" hotel across the
street from the convention center.    Business class prices to match, but the service
was excellent.    You can stay in Washington for much less money, which is explained here
on another page. |
There was a retrospective of Hans Namuth portraits at the National Portrait
Gallery (did you even know we had a National Portrait Gallery?)    She was particularly
taken by this one of Ed Albee (who now lives in Houston). |
Believe it or not, this site is in all the tourist books.    These are the steps featured
in the 70's film "The Exorcist".    Note, however, that there is no townhouse at the top
of the stairs; that was built entirely in Hollywood. |
